Resilient40 First-Ever East Africa Future Generations Tribunal and Regional Declaration

Mombasa, Kenya

Resilient40, a pan-African youth-led climate resilience network, is proud to announce the successful convening of the first-ever East Africa Future Generations Tribunal, held in Mombasa, Kenya.

This groundbreaking regional forum brought together youth leaders, community advocates, legal scholars, and policymakers from East African countries – Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mayotte, Sudan, South Sudan and Mozambique to amplify the voices of young people and future generations in environmental and climate justice.

The Tribunal provided a space for testimonies from youth and community representatives affected by climate and environmental harms – from droughts and floods to biodiversity loss and displacement highlighting the urgent need for intergenerational justice and binding accountability from both state and non-state actors.

At the close of the proceedings, participants adopted the East Africa Future Generations Declaration, a regional statement of principles affirming that:

  • Future generations hold the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and a stable climate;
  • States bear binding not aspirational duties to protect and fulfill these rights under African and international law; and
  • Youth must be recognized as equal partners in shaping climate, development, and governance agendas across the continent.

The Mombasa Tribunal marks a historic step toward institutionalizing future generations’ rights and youth-led accountability across Africa. It builds upon Resilient40’s ongoing request for an Advisory Opinion on Climate Change from the African Court and work to link climate resilience, mental well-being, and intergenerational equity, through community dialogues such as Climate Cafés and policy innovation platforms.

Resilient40 calls on regional institutions, national governments, and international partners to engage with the East Africa Future Generations Declaration and support its implementation across the region.For media inquiries:
